Most studies show that men with B12 deficiencies and low sperm counts can significantly benefit from large-dose supplementation. Common risk factors for low vitamin B12 levels in older adults include:
Low levels of stomach acid, which can be due to weakening of the stomach lining, or to medications that reduce stomach acid
Medications such as metformin (used for diabetes), which interferes with vitamin B12 absorption
Alcoholism, which irritates the stomach and sometimes is linked to a poor diet
Surgeries that remove parts (or all) of the stomach or small intestine
Any problem that causes poor absorption in the stomach or small intestine, such as Crohn’s disease
How Vitamin B12 deficiency is diagnosed?
The traditional way of diagnosing vitamin B12 deficiency has been with a serum B12 blood test to determine the B12 levels as well as the presence of any signs or symptoms of pernicious anaemia. The problem with this is that many sufferers of a B12 deficiency may not have anaemia or have a serum B12 blood level within an abnormally low range in accordance to the ‘normal’ ranges set. There are no national or international agreements of what a normal range is. The tests can also give false readings where they do not assess the bioavailability of the B12 or whether it is functional of not.
It is therefore better practice to look for trigger symptoms and undertake a one-minute health check to see if a client will benefit from B12 injections.

Are Vitamin B12 Injections Safe?
Experience has shown that vitamin B12 is completely safe, at any concentration in the diet and in the blood.
The non-toxicity of Vitamin B12 is confirmed by the US National Institute of Health Office of Dietary Supplements which states that the US Institute of Medicine (IoM) has not established any upper limit for B12 ‘because of its low toxicity’. The IoM states that ‘no adverse effects have been associated with excess vitamin B12 intake from food and supplements in healthy individuals’.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) states that the European Committee on Food (SCF) has concluded that ‘it is not possible to derive an upper intake level, mainly because no clearly identified adverse effect could be identified’.
We use Hydroxocobalamin a stable form of commercially manufactured cobalamin which converts easily in the human body into methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. An artificial form of vitamin B12 it is rapidly converted to both of the biologically active forms. Hydroxocobalamin is the form of B12 used in injections in the UK and the most usual form or B12 recommended by the B12d.org charity. Hydroxocobalamin has a hydroxy- (OH-) group attached to the cobalt atom. The hydroxy- group is extremely soluble and releases the B12 rapidly which frees B12 to interact with other biochemicals.

Are there any Side Effects?
Side effects are generally non-existent or mild. On occasion, you may experience some discomfort, bruising, redness, itching, inflammation, or tenderness at or around the site of injection that could last from a few minutes to several days. Less frequent side effects may include lightheadedness, nausea, fatigue, headache, dizziness, warmth or flushing. True allergic reaction is extremely rare. However, if you experience throat swelling, a pruritic (itchy) body rash, dangerously low blood pressure (that may result in lightheadedness, fainting or feeling weak), or symptoms associated with anaphylaxis (throat swelling, trouble breathing) following administration of an injection, please visit your nearest emergency department without hesitation or call 999.

Benefits for Vegans & Vegetarians
Vitamin B12, like all vitamins and minerals is essential but is unique in that it’s not always easy to find in food sources for Vegans. That’s because it’s found primarily in animal-based foods found mainly in fish, meat, eggs, and dairy, people who do not consume these foods are at risk of B-12 deficiency and may benefit from regular B12 injections or other supplements. Research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that vegans and some strict vegetarians have low levels of vitamin B12. Of 232 vegans studied, over half were classed as being deficient in vitamin B12. The deficiency was observed in just 7 percent of the vegetarians studied, and in only one of the omnivores.
