Frequently Asked Questions

How does IPL Laser for Skin Rejuvenation work?

When used to target the signs of premature ageing, IPL works by omitting light which is absorbed within the dermis ( the sensitive connective tissue layer of the skin located below the top layer called the epidermis) which causes a mild erythema (superficial redness of the skin) and reversible damage to the collagen network which tricks your fibroblasts ( a cell in connective tissue which produces collagen) into kick starting the healing response of the skin and promoting new collagen formation. This improves the radiancy and tightness of the skin, controlling enlarged pores, and giving a more even complexion.

What will happen during my treatment?

Upon consultation a treatment procedure will be tailored specifically to you. The skin is thoroughly cleansed, a layer of gel is applied to the area to guide the light into the skin. What will happen after my treatment, are there any side effects?

You may experience redness which can be quite obvious immediately afterwards. This usually reduces quickly in a few hours and disappears within a few days. The skin of some clients can become darker where the pigment was treated but this usually flakes off after a few days but can take up to a week. It is important that any crusts are not picked abd the skin is allowed to heal naturally. Sometimes the skin becomes lighter and sometimes small blisters may form in the treated area. The area will be tender for several days after treatment. Provided you do not have dark skin or tanned skin, patients experience very few side effects.

Pre & Post Treatment Care

Pre-Treatment Care

  • In the lead up to your treatment ensure:
  • No fake tan 2 weeks prior to your treatment.
  • No sun exposure 4 weeks prior to your treatment (use SPF 30+ daily).
  • Take anti-viral medication if you have had recent herpes close to the area.
Post-Treatment Care
  • Apply a soothing skin lotion and use an SPF 30+ sunblock daily.
  • Avoid hot baths or showers. Only wash the treated area with mild soap and clean water.
  • Because the skin is very sensitive after the treatment, you must use an SPF 30+ sunblock for at least one month after the treatment. We suggest you continue using SPF ongoing to properly protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
  • Avoid irritating the treated area by avoiding chemical skin products for 1-2 days post treatment. Some products contain harsh chemicals which should be avoided ongoing to prevent unwanted complications.
  • Only use a mild cleanser and a mild moisturiser after the treatment for a few days before resuming your normal skin routine. If desired, you may use makeup on the treated area, as long as the skin is not broken, blistered, or irritated.
  • Avoid aerobic exercise or massage for 48 hours following treatment.
  • Avoid heated yoga, saunas, pools, spas and getting over heated for 48 hours following treatment.
  • Do not pick blisters or skin crusting as this may lead to a scar.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your therapist.
