”AQUALYX” is one of the most popular and effective fat removal and body sculpting procedures. It is for those who want to lose fat at stubborn areas of the body.

Aqualyx is a non-surgical solution to minimise and remove stubborn localised pockets of fat. It is ideal for those who have pockets of fat that won’t shift, even with a good diet and exercise. This simple and effective procedure also shrinks double chins as well as improving the definition of the jawline. The treatment contracts the skin in order to achieve a more streamlined, youthful appearance.

This technique consists of injecting the solution into localised fat deposits. Aqualyx consists of phosphatidylcholine – a natural substance which, when given in higher doses, can cause the destruction of fat cells.

Destroying the fat cells is a long-term solution provided you retain a stable weight, eat healthily and continue exercise as usual. Aqualyx leads to a permanent reduction of fatty tissue; once removed, fat cells will not reappear. Unlike liposuction, AQUALYX normally leads to a degree of skin contraction too, so you’re less likely to end up with loose skin around the areas which have been treated.

Please Note: Aqualyx is a body contouring treatment not a weight loss solution. Treatments with Aqualyx are only applicable for small, localised areas. Clients must be within one stone of their recommended body weight to have treatment and be able to pinch about 3cm of fat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Aqualyx made of?

Aqualyx is natural product, a compound solution belonging to the deoxycholate family, albeit modified to some extent.

The deoxycholate family – the conjugate base of deoxycholic acid – is a bile acid, synthesized in the human liver. Naturally occurring deoxycholic acid is used in the body’s natural process of fat emulsification, where fat is broken down so that the intestines can absorb it.

The key ingredients of Aqualyx include the following:

Sugar obtained from red macroalgae

A monosaccharide sugar

Chemicals acting as a buffer system

Deoxycholic acid

Water (87%)

Sodium chloride (0.8%)

Despite the scientific terminology for these chemicals, they are all basically derived from plants. Let us take a look at each component chemical to understand their role in the product.

Sugar Obtained from Red Macroalgae

This is a sugar obtained from agar, which has anti-cariogenic properties, according to Food Chemistry; this means that this kind of sugar substitute is good for preventing dental cavities. The demand for this sugar is on the rise, given the increased preference for dietary sugars.

This hexose polymer is capable of attracting water and exchanging it for molecules of the active principle (the biologically active ingredient of a pharmaceutical drug). It releases the principle slowly, as per interstitial pressure.

A Monosaccharide Sugar

A monosaccharide sugar, D-galactose, is responsible for providing energy and finds use as a substrate for biosynthesis of several macromolecules in the human body. The main natural source of this component is mammalian milk, fruits, and vegetables, according to Human Metabolome Database (HMDB).

Buffer Systems (4.2%)

This is one of the key components of Aqualyx which is responsible for ensuring that the sodium salt of the deoxycholic acid is delivered to just the intended spot.

Sodium Salt of Deoxycholic Acid

While preparing Aqualyx, this ingredient – also known as a derivative of the deoxycholic acid – has been attenuated. In conjunction with the deliberate slowing of release by the hexose sugar, the reduced aggressiveness of this polymer makes, as per the developer’s claims, the product safe for use.

Sodium deoxycholate – mixed with phosphatidylcholine – is often used in mesotherapy, to induce lipolysis. We shall explore the concept of mesotherapy in detail below.

Water and Sodium Chloride

The water content in the product is mainly used as a substrate and for injection purposes.

How does it differ from other fat dissolving injections?

Some products, such as Lipodissolve, contain phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholic acid; however, studies have demonstrated that phosphatidylcholine injections for fat loss are ineffective and it is the deoxycholic acid part which gives the result.

How does Aqualyx work?

Aqualyx works by breaking down cell membranes to liquify the fat cell, destroying it permanently, releasing the lipids that are then eliminated naturally through the lymphatic system.

How long will the results last for?

Fat reduction is permanent, for the fat cells are destroyed; they don’t come back. Of course, if more weight is gained, then the fatty appearance will return, but in proportion with the new shape gained.

What are the side effects?

As Aqualyx a non-surgical solution it means no downtime, there are some temporary side effects, which include bruising, swelling, redness and irritation in the injection area. Sometimes it may feel a slightly tender to touch, numb or itchy but these side effects usually reside after 1-3 days.

What will happen on the day of my treatment?

After a pre-treatment consultation the area of concern will marked out. The area can be numbed for you comfort and a number of small Aqualyx injection are administered using a fine needle make sure the area if fully covered. Aqualyx causes a slight burning sensation which goes quickly. Arnica gel is massaged into the area to help stop any busing and soothe the area.

Are there any contraindiactions?

As long as you are generally healthy and don’t have any skin diseases or infections in the area treated, there are few medical reasons why you should not undergo this treatment. However, Aqualyx is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breast feeding; patients with auto-immune disease, diabetics and patients who have had severe anaphylactic reactions and allergies. It is also not recommended for those people who have been diagnosed with lipodystrophy or any pathological conditions.

How many treatments do you need and when will I see results?

A reduction in fat deposits can be seen after just one treatment, however between an average of 6 sessions are recommended to achieve desired results, 4 weeks apart.

A reduction in fat in the targeted area can be noted a number of weeks post-treatment. The speed at which noticeable results are seen will vary depending on the stability of the cell membranes; younger clients are more likely to see results after a longer period. In very small fat pads, the desired results can already be seen after one treatment.

What should I do before and after my treatment?

Before Your Treatment Many clients are concerned with having visible signs following Aqualyx treatment. There are a few key steps you can take to help you both minimise visible bruising and swelling and recover as quickly as possible. The more closely you follow these steps, the faster you will recover and the fewer signs will be visible:

  • Avoid any blood thinners (e.g. alcohol, aspirin, Vitamin E, some herbal preparations and supplements) for 2 days prior to and 2 days after treatment. Thin blood results in increased risk of bruising, so help minimise bruising risk by avoiding anything that can thin your blood.
  • Take arnica tablets as follows: 2 tablets every 2 hours for 5 days prior to the treatment. The 30c potency are best.
You may wish to purchase the products mentioned in the next section PRIOR to your treatment so you don’t need to visit the chemist after treatment. Protocol for resolving bruising and swelling
  • Hot compress: very hot water, soak clean cloth, wring out very tight, lay over the face so that the heat and steam goes to the face. Repeat several times, ideally every 2 hours if possible.
  • Arnica cream: Available in Boots, apply generously before going to bed, will help resolve bruising.
  • Wearing a compression garment can help with the swelling (and results).
After Care Advice
  • Immediately after treatment, there may be slight redness, swelling, tenderness and an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injections. The inconvenience is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. If it continues or if other reactions occur, please call us. The results directly after the treatment should not be seen as the final result.
  • Avoid touching the treatment area 6 hours after the treatment. After that the area can be gently washed with soap and water, and light make-up can be applied in the case of the neck/jaw area after 24 hours.
  • Until the initial swelling has resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. solarium and sunbathing) or extreme cold.
  • If you are using aspirin or any similar medication, be aware that these may increase the bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
If you experience persistent or increasing swelling and redness that might indicate infection, or bruising that is more than average, contact Vicki Hexter, or call on 07477852791.
